In a passion of craftsmanship and exquisite design, The Rug Company has partnered with luxury wallpaper brand de Gournay, to transform their Shanghai showroom with five custom and bespoke designs.
Modern masters of hand-painted and embroidered wallpaper, de Gournay did not hold back with their rug selection. Stepping off the streets of Shanghai’s French Concession, this showroom-cum-house greets you with a feast for the eyes. A tight, but winding staircase sits central to the architecture, showcasing Karsansui’s elegant silk threads with each step. Inspired by the Japanese art of raking sand – meticulous silver lines slink up the staircase, shifting to gold tones halfway to complement the changing wallpaper.
As you delve into the showroom’s ethereal labyrinth, you will discover the ‘Namban room’. A bespoke rug design sits centre stage, its rounded form showcases delicate golden threads, which dance across the composition, appearing to reflect the glistening gold wallpaper.
This echoed approach continues into the ‘Kelly Hoppen Room’, where a second bespoke design mirrors the emotional brush strokes on the wall. Layers of thick wool are contrasted with nimble silk metallic threads, highlighting rich texture and clever craftsmanship.
A further two of The Rug Company’s favourites adorn the showroom. In true luxury style, Salon Deco features in the ‘Fishes Room’, showcasing its iconic Art Deco balustrade and metallic tones. Taking a subtler approach in the bedroom, Wizlet’s neutral hue provides a grounding force.
